Dave Chappelle is widely considered to be a comedic genius. So when Netflix announced it had released two Chappelle stand-up specials, people freaked. A little comedy to wrap up this bitter year has to be a good thing, right?

Well, maybe. But maybe not. The specials just dropped, but there's already some pushback when it comes to Chappelle's thoughts on the transgender community.

Of the two videos, "The Bird Revelation" and "Equanimity," it's the latter that is once again bringing Chappelle's controversial views into the spotlight. In it, he reflects on past jokes of his that critics have called transphobic.  Read more...

President Donald Trump is often accused of living in his own personal fantasy world where white supremacists are "very fine people" and New Jersey muslims celebrated the 9/11 attack. So it is perhaps fitting that his New Year's Eve celebration at Mar-a-Largo has, according to The Washington Post, a "modern fantasy garden” theme.

And while we're excited to see what mythical bullshit takes root in such a gathering of sycophants and enablers, we also can't help but note that Team Trump passed up a wonderful opportunity to explore other themes perhaps more germane to the 45th presidency of these great United States.  Read more...

Imagine attending a business meeting with an Amazon Echo (or any voice-driven device) sitting on the conference table. A question arises about the month’s sales numbers in the Southeast region. Instead of opening a laptop, opening a program like Excel and finding the numbers, you simply ask the device and get the answer instantly. That kind of scenario is increasingly becoming a… Read More

Chrissy Teigen is not here for your bullshit, especially if that bullshit involves suggesting she and her husband John Legend are involved in a pedophile ring involving their own daughter.

On Saturday, Teigen laid into a conspiracy theorist on Twitter that had tweeted out pictures of her daughter and insinuated that she and husband John Legend were part of some sort of secret society of celebrity pedophiles.

This latest addition to the Pizzagate delusion began on Dec. 27. In a now-deleted tweet, a conspiracy theorist posted photos of Teigen's daughter and suggested the celebrity's use of a pizza emoji was evidence of something nefarious.  Read more...

In case you didn't notice, it's very cold across parts of the globe, stretching from a good chunk of the U.S. to the UK and Europe and even down into India this New Year's EveThe coldest in decades, in fact, and the chill is going to hang around for a bit.

While that makes it incredibly inconvenient to do anything that doesn't involve being on your couch under around a dozen or so blankets, the weather does make for some interesting images and you can enjoy them without having to dig out your gloves and scarf.  Read more...

It’s been pretty easy to point at Twitter and, with each quarterly moment when it discloses its financial guts, let out a long exasperated sigh. But then something interesting happened in the back half of 2017: it went on a rather spectacular run, and though ending on a bit of a slump, it looks like it could finish the year up more than 25 percent — which, by Twitter terms, is… Read More

In Boston, officials planning annual First Night festivities don't have to worry about melting ice sculptures this year. In fact, with air temperatures tumbling toward the single digits on Sunday night, New Year's Eve is going to be so dangerously cold that event organizers have canceled all but the fireworks display.

In New York City, the ball drop in Times Square will take place amid the coldest weather since about 1962, when the temperature at midnight was a measly 1 degree Fahrenheit. The forecast air temperature at midnight is just 10 degrees above zero, with a wind chill of minus-5 to minus-20 degrees Fahrenheit.  Read more...

The Iranian government has blocked access to messaging app Telegram and photo app Instagram amid several days of protests in what authorities say is a move "to maintain tranquillity and security of society," according to state-run media

Various media reports have stated that the apps were used to coordinate plans and share photos and videos of the demonstrations, which began as protests over economic inequality but have since grown in scope, taking aim at leading political figures like Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei  and President Hassan Rouhani. It is almost time for 2018, and that means it's been 10 years since some very iconic music was released.

Beyonce, Kanye West, and Coldplay were all making career shaping records back in 2008. While newcomers like MGMT, Adele, and Lady Gaga were also carving out lanes for themselves. Here's a look back at career defining work from your favorite artists.

1. Kanye West - 808 and Heartbreak

When Kanye won multiple Grammys for his sophomore album Late Registration, he gave a frantic speech. “Everybody wanted to know what I would do if didn’t win," said Kanye while holding up his trophies and looking directly into the camera.  "Well I guess we’ll never know.” That speech was a perfect display of Kanye's hubris and his sometimes critical self-awareness.  Happy New Year! It’s been a transformational year in tech. The golden era of startups ended. Sorry about that. The tech industry finally rolled over a big rock it had ignored and/or leaned on for years, and exposed the squirming morass of sexual harassment beneath. We witnessed major AI breakthroughs, a cryptocurrency megaboom, really truly self-driving cars, and 18 SpaceX launches. But… Read More

Almost half of Americans make New Year’s resolutions. Far fewer stick to them. “Losing weight” and “exercising more” are among the most popular goals. A sizeable percentage of Americans also aim to “be a better person.” TechCrunch reviewed apps that are designed to help people stay on track with these plans. Human Twitter accounts serve their purpose, but I prefer tweets from bots.

Research suggests there are now some 30 million tweeting bots — though this might be a low estimate. Some of these bots provide weather updates, make stock recommendations, or attempt to subvert democracy.

I, however, like bots that aren't necessarily so useful nor ambitious. I look forward to their musings because their primary directive is to produce creative or absurd content — and I'm not alone.

"I like anything that’s going to inject a little strangeness, beyond the normal strangeness that we have every day now," Charles Bergquist, the creator of my favorite twitter bot, NewFound Planets, told Mashable. Bergquist is also the director of the public radio program Science FridayRead more...

The "Nigerian prince" email scam is one of the most notorious cybercimes out there, and the people behind it may have hit a bit of a snag after one of their alleged co-conspirators was arrested in Louisiana on Thursday.

Police arrested a 67-year-old man in Slidell, Louisiana after an 18-month investigation in connection with Nigerian prince email scams. The man is suspected of being a middle-man for a group in Nigeria that used the Nigerian prince email scam to get money from unsuspecting people, the Slidell Police Department announced on Facebook.

Hyperscale operators are defined as enormous companies like Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google that need to provide computing on a massive scale.  Each massive exit in the tech ecosystem usually follows the same cycle: an upstart becomes a huge business, it goes public or sells for a huge sum of money, many of the best people that built it take off and then they use their newfound wealth to start companies. But in addition to tech, the venture community has its own pet project: coffee. Read More

T-Mobile CEO John Legere has never been known to remain quiet. As New Year's Eve approaches, it's been no different.

In an annual memo posted to the T-Mobile blog, Mr. Legere offers up his raw opinions on the passing year and includes several predictions about the future.

The biggest takeaway: Legere is excited about T-Mobile's 5G internet development. "One of the most under-reported stories for 2017 is the 600 MHz auction," he says in the post, referring to the FCC's spectrum auction in April.

"While [Verizon and AT&T] focus on 5G hotspots that won’t work when you leave your home, we will be the only ones on the fast-track toward a real, mobile nationwide 5G network in 2020 – and have already started deploying 5G ready equipment," he says. Read more...

He paid the price.

A London Tube passenger this week snagged his inner-thigh and penis in the fare gate while trying to jump over the barriers to avoid paying. The jumper remained stuck and screaming for several minutes while authorities struggled to dislodge him.

A video of the incident was posted on Facebook Thursday:

The man, who was yelling in pain while commuters looked on, received some assistance from London Underground workers, British Transit Police, and passersby, who appeared to be relieving pressure from the affected area, as well as trying to lift him out. Read more...

If you keep a phone around long enough, it becomes a vestige of an old version of yourself, or even many former versions of yourself.

Regrettable texts, untouched apps, and pointless screenshots are scattered on its internal storage. The cloud makes it worse by making these files available even when we get a new phone. It's a gigantic mess that's never worth sorting through, especially when it's so easy to bring back the old files.

But my iPhone X has given me a new lease on life. Rather than backing up my musty old data from Apple, I'm just letting it go. No old apps. No old contacts. Nothing's old. It's a completely fresh start.  Read more...

When you apply for credit, you essentially ask a lender to evaluate your financial picture to make an informed decision about your approval, rate and terms. The information that lenders use primarily comes from two sources: you and private credit bureaus. This system is imperfect. It’s held back by outdated technology at the IRS. New legislation would change this. Read More
