The 2021 Premium Unity Game Developer Certification Bundle is on sale.

TL;DR: The 2021 Premium Unity Game Developer Certification Bundle is on sale for £14.41 as of Aug. 1, saving you 99% on list price.

Last year might’ve sucked big time, but it was actually a great year for gaming. A couple shiny new consoles came out, as well as a treasure trove of new games. Major studios had some big releases, but the biggest standouts of the year were the indie gems.

In fact, Among Us, a charming indie party game of teamwork and betrayal, ranked high on many lists as one of the best games of 2020. It held its own among major studio hits and was even labeled one of the best comfort-food games of the year. And, guess what: It was made in a tiny development studio in Washington on none other than the Unity engine — a platform even non-coders can build games on.

With this Unity Game Developer Bundle, you have the potential to create the next Among Us. It features 17 courses and 146 hours of training on both Unity and Blender and is led mostly by John Bura. Bura’s contributed to 40 commercial games — several of which have risen to number one in the App Store. He’s also the owner of gaming studio Mammoth Interactive and even recently sold a game to Nickelodeon. With his instruction, you’ll be on your way to creating your dream game in no time.

The training itself is based on a learning-by-doing structure. That means, as you work your way through each course, you’ll actually create a game that mirrors the concepts you learned. For example, you’ll make a platform shooter game with pixel art, an AR block builder game, your own Battle Royale game, and even a 3D Super Mario clone. By the end, you’ll even learn how to monetise games and design your own completely from scratch.

While it's valued at well over £2,000, you can virtually enroll in this Unity training for only £14.41 for a limited time.

Small businesses have to find ways to compete with the big box stores and companies with more resources and recognition. The best way is to stand out by developing a reputation for reliability and top-notch service. One of the keys to achieving that is by always being available and easy for your clients and customers to contact. There's a secret weapon that small businesses can utilize to stay connected: VoIP.

An excellent VoIP service (it stands for voice over internet protocol, in case you were wondering) goes a long way to making this possible while keeping costs low.

So what is a VoIP, exactly?

Think of it like using FaceTime or Skype but as a professional service, or as a souped-up and internet-connected version of your standard landline connection. Everything businesses need from their phone system, VoIP can do better — and often cheaper.

But, how do you know what to look for when seeking out a great VoIP service for your small business? Don't worry. We've got you covered with a look at the best VoIPs for every kind of small business and every budgetary need.

Why does your small business need a VoIP service?

When it comes to running your business, there is perhaps nothing more fundamental to the operation than communication, from organizing your team to getting in touch with customers and clients. VoIP services provide an enhanced version of what you'd expect from a standard business phone provider. A VoIP service gives you crystal clear phone calls and video calls because you're connected to the internet and have a digital connection that can transmit more data at faster speeds. Even better, you can typically get service from a VoIP provider at a lower price than a landline service.

That makes it ideal simply if you're trying to communicate with other employees remotely, but it also offers so much more. Many VoIP providers offer services for small businesses will give you toll-free numbers, automatic call recording, and even features like a switchboard feature or virtual receptionist assistant. All these capabilities make your business seem more professional to potential clients, as well as help you organize your work practices more effectively.

Why VoIP is ideal for the remote workplace

We already covered call quality and some of the additional features that you can get from a VoIP service, but there are other benefits as well. Key among them is the fact that VoIP systems can integrate seamlessly into your existing workflow. That is a big deal. Anyone who has ever been a part of an office that tries to switch over their CRM software knows just how big of a disruption it can be. VoIP services often offer options that allow you to use it with your existing software without any interruption.

It’s also the ideal tool for the modern workplace. As more and more companies are going remote — or staying remote after the pandemic — staying in touch with your team is as important as ever. So is making sure they have access to the tools that they need to do their job. VoIP services aren’t limited to the hard-wired connection of a landline. You’ll be able to set up conference calls and access the full suite of tools from your VoIP’s digital dashboard no matter where you’re working from.

What to look for in a small business VoIP

There are dozens of different VoIP companies out there, so it's crucial that you know what elements you most need. The smallest of small businesses may only need a cheap landline replacement and some basic collaborative features for remote workers. Still, it's likely you also want extra features, like being able to record calls or a virtual receptionist to handle multiple clients at once.

Avoid overpaying for services you don't need. If your business doesn't rely on CRMs, then you shouldn't go out of your way to find a VoIP service that includes CRM integration. Make sure your VoIP can grow with you, such as by ensuring that you can upgrade your service as you develop. It's good to have a business plan for the future.

via Tingle Tech

We have evolved past the need for landlines. Welcome to the era of VoIP. At its simplest, a VoIP (also known as Voice over Internet Protocol) is a way of making phone calls through the internet rather than having to rely on a regular landline or your cell phone. Think of it kind of like FaceTime or Skype but typically far more advanced and specialized than those services.

While many VoIP services involve a subscription fee, don’t let the dollar signs fool you: they often end up saving you money and can prove to be cheaper than using a standard phone line. That's particularly the case when dealing with long-distance calls or business conferences. Such services are also typically far more reliable, which is crucial for certain scenarios. And as more of the world moves online and businesses shift to more remote work, being able to stay connected and in contact anywhere is increasingly important.

Keep on reading and we'll explain all when it comes to the wonders of VoIP and take a look at the best VoIPs, no matter what your situation is.

Why are VoIPs important?

VoIPs are important for many different people. For businesses, it can be hugely beneficial to have crisp and clear calls, no matter where you're calling from. Most companies can’t settle for static and spotty signals when it comes to important conference calls and daily communications. VoIPs provide a steady connection and crystal clear call quality as long as you have an internet connection.

SEE ALSO: What the heck is a VoIP? An expert explains.

For those people with relatives around the world, they can enjoy cheap phone calls that remain high in quality and aren't dependent on anything other than a regular landline for the relative. That's particularly useful when dealing with friends or family who aren't tech-savvy. You’ll save on those international charges that can add up in a hurry and spend more time talking about what is important to you rather than doing tech support for those on the other end of the line.

In all cases, the big benefit is the reduced costs. Regular calls and international calls cost a lot over time. Businesses have the additional expense of needing to pay for features like toll-free numbers or automatic call recording. These can all come as standard with certain VoIP services.

How do VoIPs work, exactly?

VoIP systems are much simpler than you might imagine. Put simply, they are a way to make calls over your internet connection instead of your landline or mobile network.

To get a little more technical, VoIP systems let you connect to a server that allows you to place calls to other telephone networks across your internet connection. It converts your analog voice signal — the kind that is used when placing a standard phone call — into a digital signal by your VoIP service provider and transmitted over your internet connection.

The result is an experience identical to placing a call over a landline or mobile network, except the call quality is better and the cost is typically cheaper.

What to look for when buying a VoIP service

There are dozens of different VoIP services out there, so it's important to know what you are looking for and what will best serve your needs.

Think about why you are considering a VoIP service in the first place. If you're looking to call relatives at a lower price, then you don't need to worry about business features like toll-free numbers, fax, or automatic call recording. However, you do want to make sure the calls are crisp and high-quality, and voicemail features could be useful.

If you're a small business, you don't have to worry about conference call support for dozens of users, but you could probably do with some flexibility to expand the plan as your business grows. You also want to check that you can port your old number across if customers are used to that number from before.

And if you’re a larger business, you’re going to want to take a look at the full suite of features. Conference calling might become essential, especially if your workforce is becoming more remote-friendly. Fax services, as well as toll-friendly numbers and answering machine features are also likely to need some consideration.

In all cases, it's vital to know what your budget is so you can keep to it accordingly. Read on to discover our picks for the best VoIPs.

Bear 128

The livestreamed fat bear cams are delightful. But they also reveal a harsh, competitive bear world.

On July 19, when many bears gathered at the Brooks River in Alaska's Katmai National Park and Preserve to catch big sockeye salmon at a popular ursine fishing spot, a well-known mother bear attacked another, younger bear. The scene, while not bloody, is intense and lurid, so it comes with a graphic warning.

As shown in the YouTube video below, recorded from the explore.org livestream of Katmai's bears (of Fat Bear Week internet fame), a younger bear attempts to steal a fish from bear 128, aka "Grazer." Grazer reacts by using her jaws to violently grab and attack the bear. The event underscores the brutal competitiveness of the bear world.

"This situation highlights the risk and competition that bears experience in order to satisfy their hunger and defend their cubs," Mike Fitz, a former park ranger at Katmai and now a resident naturalist for explore.org, explains in the 14-minute video.

Here's a brief rundown:

Starting at 1:35: The young "teenage" bear, who's around 2.5 years old, successfully steals a fish from Grazer and her two cubs, who are standing atop the waterfall on the left. It's an impressive accomplishment, because Grazer is a particularly defensive, alert bear. "Being able to steal a fish from Grazer is no small feat," noted Fitz.

Starting at 3:05: The small bear, emboldened by its previous success, again approaches the bear family.

Starting at 3:52 [Graphic warning]: The small bear tries to grab another fish from Grazer, but Grazer clinches the top of the bear's neck and head in her jaws. She holds the bear for some 30 seconds, at times violently twisting and shaking the bear's head.

"For a lack of a better word, she's mauling it," observed Fitz.

Eventually, Grazer lets go and the young bear retreats. The defeated bear has clearly just been dominated and potentially injured by a larger, older, and more established bear.

But for the younger bear, who needs to gain fat to outlast the long Alaskan winter hibernation (which is essentially an extreme fast), the risk was necessary.

"It's a tough life being a young bear," explained Fitz. "You have to face a lot of competition...to survive winter hibernation."

"It's a tough life being a young bear."

Meanwhile, Grazer also had to fend off competition for calories. She needs to fatten up for winter, too, as do her cubs. The popular, livestreamed bears have about three months left to pack on weight before the winter famine begins.

For now, the young, skinny, defeated bear certainly needs to get fatter. But perhaps it won't attempt to again steal a 4,500-calorie salmon from Grazer.

"Not all fish are worth such a high price," said Fitz.

Heavy rains flooded the I-94 in Detroit in late July.

Climate 101 is a Mashable series that answers provoking and salient questions about Earth’s warming climate.

A deadly deluge in China recently trapped passengers on a subway train with water creeping up to their necks. Indeed, on our continually warming planet the rains are growing more extreme, the floods more devastating.

Atmospheric scientists know why. When air temperature is warmer the atmosphere can naturally hold more water vapor (heat makes water molecules evaporate into water vapor), meaning there's more water in the air, particularly in many humid or rainy regions. Consequently, this boosts the odds of potent storms like thunderstorms, mid-latitude cyclones, atmospheric rivers, or hurricanes deluging places with more water.

"Once you have more moisture in the air, you have a larger bucket you can empty," explained Andreas Prein, a scientist who researches weather extremes at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. As research shows, this can result in pummeling downpours. "You can release more water in a shorter amount of time — there's very little doubt about that," Prein said.

Massive flooding ensues. The summer of 2021 is rife with vivid, and at times jaw-dropping, examples. Damaging and sometimes extremely deadly floods recently hit Europe, New York City, India, China, Detroit, and beyond.

Importantly, a warming climate doesn't mean it's always going to rain profoundly hard. It means there are boosted odds for strong storms to pick up extra water vapor in the atmosphere, resulting in these extreme deluges that drop many inches of rain in just a few hours.

"You're loading the dice," emphasized Brian Tang, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Albany. "The risk of a lot of rain over a short amount of time will increase."

For every 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit of warming (or one degree Celsius) the air holds about seven percent more water vapor. Earth has warmed by just over 2 degrees Fahrenheit since the late 1800s, resulting in more storms significantly juiced with more water. That's how urban areas, even with flood control infrastructure, can get overwhelmed with water. And sometimes, storms stall over land, resulting in immense, unprecedented flooding, like during record-breaking rains from Hurricane Harvey.

No one expects the rains to relent. Civilization's energy system is certainly headed in a significantly cleaner direction, but the global economy is still largely dominated by fossil fuels that emit potent heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere, meaning the world will almost certainly keep warming for a few decades, if not well beyond. Expect extreme or unusual deluges, particularly in places that receive plentiful storms, like the Northeast. (The amount of precipitation during the heaviest rain events in the Northeast has already increased by 71 percent between 1958 and 2012, and other U.S. regions have seen sizable increases, too.)

"Our best state of knowledge is they will continue to increase," said Tang, referencing heavy rains in the Northeast. "Expect more high-intensity rainfall and more flash flooding."

"You're loading the dice."

It's certainly true that flood infrastructure — like diversion channels (see the L.A. river), dykes, and reservoirs — can limit major flooding. But at some point, with amplified rainfall, there can be too much water to contain.

"You can only prepare for so much," said Prein. "It's really hard to build infrastructure that can keep up with those flood volumes."

Such is the reality on a warming planet. When the rains come, there's boosted odds of severe, if not unprecedented, water drenching the earth. It's one of the clearest consequences of a hotter world.

"What's striking to me is seeing the rate of change," said Prein. "It's getting worse really fast — we're living in climate change now. You can see it all over the globe."

If there's one thing we've learned in recent times, it's that we simply cannot predict what life is going to throw at us. From wild weather events to a worldwide pandemic, it's becoming abundantly clear that we should all try to be a little more self-sufficient these days. After all, mother nature's been pretty angry with us, so it's high time we call in the reinforcements and supply ourselves with some backup.

From natural disasters to unpredictable emergencies at home or on the road, it could take a while for emergency responders to reach you when you’re in need. In these survival scenarios, having some essential gear at the ready could make all the difference. That's why we've rounded up some of the best survival kits and go bags to help you prepare for all the things you can't predict. (Just in case.)

Why do I need a survival kit?

An emergency situation could entail anything from a power outage to having to fend for yourself in the wilderness (depending on your usual activities, of course). And in some cases, you just need to evacuate in a hurry! So we might as well prepare for it all, right?

Hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, fires, blizzards, blackouts ... maybe even a dash of zombie apocalypse to spice things up, who knows! I'm certainly not ruling anything out these days. But my point is, you can never be too careful.

That said, you certainly don't need to be a doomsday prepper with a well-stocked bunker to want to keep yourself safe in case of an emergency. There are plenty of pre-made survival gear kits out there to fit all sorts of needs, whether you want to stash some basic essentials in your car, take some wilderness survival tools on your next camping trip, or stock up on goods to hunker down in said bunker. You might even consider covering all of your bases with a couple different types of kits that'll help you out both indoors and outdoors. It all comes down to your particular needs.

What should a survival kit include?

There can be a lot to consider when searching for your ideal emergency survival kit, especially depending on where you live, what natural threats might be expected and whether you intend to use your kit during outdoor adventures. However, there are a lot of commonalities across many of the best survival kits on the market, so we're going to break down what you may see and why you might want to have that gear by your side in any given survival situation.

And sure, you could technically buy everything separately, or cherry-pick what you think you might need. But it's very likely to cost you more money for less gear, and it will definitely cost you more time. Plus, you'll leave yourself open to gaps in necessary gear that you might not have expected you would need (not until the very last minute, anyway).

That said, you're probably not going to find everything you need in one kit simply because everyone's situation is so unique. But a pre-made survival kit will still give you a major leg up, especially if you're not sure where to start. And you can always supplement a solid kit with additional essential items as you see fit for your specific needs down the line.

At its very core, an emergency survival kit should include essential items that provide sustenance (i.e. an emergency food supply and water), warmth, safety, first aid, and navigation. And, unless you've got one of those aforementioned bunkers, it should all fit within something easily transportable in case you need to get the hell out of dodge in a hurry.

Common emergency supplies that you'll probably want in your survival kit include:

  • A hand-crank radio, flashlight and/or charger so that you don't need to rely on electricity or batteries for information, light and communication. However, a tactical flashlight should be quite reliable, too.

  • A multi-tool with the ability to act as a bottle opener or survival knife to help you cut through rope, or open boxes, bags, bottles and cans of food.

  • A first aid kit to patch up any injuries as best as possible until help arrives. Ideally, this would include surgical gloves for cleanliness, as well as over-the-counter painkillers, antihistamines, and any other similar essentials.

  • A compass to find your bearings when outdoors.

  • A signal mirror, flare, or glowstick to visually alert others.

  • A whistle to audibly alert others to your location, whether lost in the wilderness or if you need to be rescued from your home in the case of a flood, tornado, or another natural disaster. Pea-less (those without moving parts) are the loudest.

  • Waterproof matches and/or a lighter for starting fires for warmth and to cook, whether outdoors or indoors.

  • An emergency poncho for protection from the elements.

  • An emergency blanket—usually a mylar blanket—for warmth.

  • Meal-replacement bars or dehydrated meals (just add water!) with a long shelf life.

  • Water and/or a water purification system, such as filtering straws or water purification tablets. If the water is provided, it's important that it's packed in pouches with a long shelf life because regular plastic bottles can leach chemicals over time.

  • Face masks. We've come to know them for virus protection, but don't forget they're crucial for keeping out dust, too.

  • Some survival kits will even include an emergency tent and a sleeping bag or two. Both can come in handy when you lose your way outdoors, but also if you need to "set up camp" at an evacuation center outside of the emergency zone. You’ll probably want to supplement your kit with a legitimate camping tent if you’re actually planning to be outdoors for a wilderness outing, though.

  • If you live in an area that can get cold, you might also want a survival kit with hand warmers and other considerations for low temperatures.

  • Items in a personal hygiene kit, such as toilet paper and body wipes (and biohazard bags to put them in after use) shouldn't be overlooked either. Some outdoor survival kits, however, might opt for a trowel to dig catholes to hide your business when nature calls.

  • Now would also be a good time to emphasize the importance of hand sanitizer. Never not crucial to have around.

  • And duct tape! You can use it to repair gear, patch leaks, stabilize a broken limb, fashion it into a bowl for eating or collecting water—the possibilities are endless. You may not find it in all survival kits, though, probably because it's so cheap to buy on its own, and it's also super easy to just throw a roll in with an existing kit. But honestly, it could wind up being the most valuable item of them all.

There are also some things you won't find in a pre-packed survival kit, but you should absolutely keep stashed in or around your go bag. These specific survival items include rechargeable batteries, a solar power bank or charger (and any necessary power cords for your devices), an extra set of car or house keys, cash, any prescription medications you or your family may need, and extra pairs of prescription eyewear. You might also want to stash some local maps, emergency contact info for loved ones, and important documents in a waterproof, fire-safe container or sleeve, too. And don't forget about your pets! Be sure to keep food, water, and other essentials on hand for them as well.

All of that considered, let's jump into the best survival kits that are already pre-packed with emergency supplies to give you a head start on disaster preparedness.
